Instructions to Authors

Genes & Genetic Systems, formerly the Japanese Journal of Genetics, is published bimonthly by the Genetics Society of Japan. Genes & Genetic Systems covers a wide range in the field of genetics: general genetics, molecular genet-ics, cell genetics, developmental genetics, population ge-netics and evolution, molecular evolution, and genome re-search. Members of the society in particular are encourag-ed to submit manuscripts, which should be in English, but nonmembers are welcome to contribute as well.

1) Types of articles
(a) Original papers.
(b) Short communications, including gene mapping data.
(c) Reviews, including mini-review.
(d) Abstracts of papers presented at the annual meeting of the Society.
(e) Book reviews.

2) Preparation of the manuscript
(a) The manuscript should be typewritten double spac-ed. Sections should be arranged in the following order: (i) title page, (ii) abstract, (iii) text, (iv) reference list, (v) tables, (vi) legends for illustrations, and (vii) illustrations.

(b) The title page should comprise: (i) the title of the manuscript, (ii) name(s) of the author(s), (iii) academic or professional affiliation(s), (iv) complete address(es), (v) any footnotes referring to the above items, (vi) run-ning head (not to exceed 50 letters including spaces), and (vii) name of the corresponding author, his/her address, telephone and facsimile numbers, and E-mail address.

(c) The abstract should state the scope of the work and the principal findings in no more than 300 words. Re-ferences should not be included.

(d) Each table should be on a separate sheet, and col-lected at the end of the manuscript after the reference list. Tables should be provided with headings on the same sheet.

(e) Illustrations (line drawings and graphs) should be made in black on white paper. Original photographs suitable for reproduction should be submitted. Letter-ing should be large enough to permit photographic reduction. Photographs should be glossy prints with strong contrast. A list of legends on a separate sheet(s) is required. Color plates can be produced provided that the author meets the additional cost.

(f) References should be cited in the text by the author(s) and year, and listed at the end of the text with the names of authors arranged alphabetically. Personal communications and unpublished data or reports should not be included in the reference list; they may be mentioned in parentheses in the text. In the reference list, follow the following examples.

Evans, H. J., and Scott, D. (1964) Influence of DNA synthe-sis on the production of chromatid aberrations by X rays and maleic hydrazide in Vicia faba. Genetics 49, 17_38. Fishbein, L. (1972) Pesticidal, industrial, food additive, and drug mutagens. In: Mutagenic Effects of Envi-ronmental Contaminants (eds.: H. E. Sutton, and M. I. Harris), pp. 129_170. Academic Press, New York.

(g) Genus or species names, names of genes, mathemati-cal formulae, and other terms requiring special symbols should be appropriately indicated by the use of italics, boldface letters, superscripts, and sub-scripts. Italics should be shown by straight under-lining, and boldface letters by wavy underlining.

(h) Footnotes should be avoided whenever possible. If absolutely necessary, they should be numbered and appear at the bottom of the page in question.

(i) It is strongly recommended that authors prepare manuscripts on a word processor. The following word processing programs can be used if a floppy disk will be submitted: WordPerfect for the NEC9801 and IBM-PC series (5" or 3.5"), WordStar for the NEC9801 series (5" or 3.5"), and MS-Word for Macintosh (3.5").

(j) The author is requested to submit three complete sets of the manuscript. If the manuscript is prepared with one of the programs listed above, please add a floppy disk to the hard copies.

3) Page charges The author is requested to pay 4,000 for each printed page up to 9 pages, and 6,000 for each additional page.

4) Proofreading Proofreading should be limited to the correction of typo-graphical errors. Any additional cost due to changes made at the proofreading stage will be charged to the author.

5) Offprints The minimum number of reprints that can be ordered is 100. A reprint order form and price list will be sent with the galley proof.

6) Copyrights The copyright for articles which appears in Genes & Genetic Systems is held by The Genetics Society of Japan. Copyright Transfer Form will be sent with reprint order from.

7) Correspondence Manuscripts and correspondence concerning editorial matters should be addressed to:

Editor-in-Chief, Genes & Genetic Systems
Research Institute for Microbial Diseases
Osaka University
Suita, Osaka 565-0871, Japan

or directly to one of the editors representing the discipline involved.
